Is the topical use of peppermint extract effective for hair growth?
Have you ever used a shampoo with peppermint oil on your scalp and felt that tingle? It feels invigorating, refreshing and like 'it must be working to do something for my scalp!' Is it really stimulating blood flow to hair follicles (vasodilator) bringing your hair follicles more nutrients?
Unfortunately, there are very few human studies done on natural plant efficacy. The Peppermint plant is no different. However, there is an interesting animal study done on the effects of hair growth using peppermint oil. The results were far from boring. This study used peppermint oil (France) certified as 100% pure and natural essential oil and jojoba oil (Desert Whale, USA). The 3% minoxidil was obtained from Hyundai Pharmacia (Korea). Peppermint came in first for stimulating hair growth! I find it worth noting that in a study of Rosemary and Minoxidil for hair growth, 2% Minoxidil was used showing Rosemary to be as effective. In this studying using peppermint, it surpassed the 3% Minoxidil used in parallel. Could Peppermint be more effective for hair growth than Rosemary?! Read the study on Peppermint here
